Food for thought on R&D funding. This article in the Guardian points out that research in universities is already underfunded – covering 72% of costs, and that a cut in fees could lead to university spending moving away from R&D. Important not to forget the incubators and vital partners. Two figures also in here that grabbed me were the 4% of GDP that South Korea spends on R&D each year versus the UK at 1.7%. This has been a big success for Korea – not just in tablets, phones, and cars either (think other industries like biotech, engineering, batteries/chemicals amongst a swathe of other industrial industries they are now world leaders in and growing).
